Dry sieving: a tried and tested tradition
The sieving method, or dry sieving, is widely used in the world of CBD resin production. It involves separating the trichomes, rich in cannabinoids and terpenes, from the rest of the plant. To do this, we use a bowl covered with a fine cloth or a sieve.
The flowers are placed on the sieve, and the bowl is then closed with plastic to prevent loss. The trichomes are detached by gently tapping the top of the bowl with chopsticks. The collected kief is then pressed for several minutes to obtain a homogeneous texture. This stage can last several days, to refine the quality of the resin obtained. If stored in a cool, dark place, the resin will keep for many years.
Ice-o-Lator: the art of cold extraction
Unlike dry sieving, which uses heat, the Ice-o-Lator method relies on cold to extract the trichomes. The flowers are first frozen for 48 hours before being immersed in a container of ice-cold water. This action causes the trichomes to contract, making them easier to detach from the flowers.
Next, a blender, bubbleator or even a drill is used to agitate everything for around 5 to 15 minutes. The resulting substance is then passed through various sieves to separate the trichomes from the rest of the plant and the water. After air-drying, always protected from light and heat, the resulting resin can be stored for many years.
Hand-rolling: a traditional technique
Hand-rolling is a less common but equally fascinating method. It requires patience and skill. This technique involves rubbing the flowers between your hands to collect the resin glands stuck to the skin. The small quantities collected are then formed into a ball to create CBD resin.
This artisanal method requires clean, dry hands. It allows you to fully experience the process and savor the fruits of your labor. Although more difficult and less productive than other techniques, it offers a unique and authentic experience.
