The Origins of Cheesecake

Cheesecake is a direct descendant of Cheese, one of the most unique strains on the British scene. It all began in the early 1990s in a squat in Luton, England. An activist collective, the Exodus Collective, was growing its own plants from Skunk #1 seeds imported from the Netherlands. Among these plants, one phenotype stood out dramatically: its aroma was unlike any other Skunk. Distinctly cheesy, almost pungent, and instantly recognizable. 

The collective took a cutting from it, which quickly made the rounds in the British underground scene. Cheese was born—not from a planned cross but from a selection based on intuition, in a setting as far removed from a laboratory as possible.

In the 2000s, British breeder Milo Yung (Big Buddha Seeds) stabilized this phenotype as a seed strain by crossing it with an Afghan, enabling its global distribution. American breeders then took it on and crossed it with sweeter dessert strains (Confidential Cheese, Girl Scout Candy) and mellow its profile. The cheesy aroma becomes more rounded, and sweet and creamy notes come to the fore. 

The Cheesecake was born out of this selection process; it is a direct descendant of the Cheese, but with the mellow character of a dessert.
